Downey, CA… Michelle Ontiveros of Bellflower
originally found “Kobe” a small, white, curly coated Terrier running
stray in the city of Bellflower and she did the right thing – she
brought him to the SEAACA animal care center so that his owner(s)
can reclaim him. Kobe was never claimed and five days later was
adopted by Mrs. Ontiveros and her family. The playful pooch went
home to get to know her two young daughters, 11year-old Sarah and 12
year-old Stephanie, and become a permanent part of the Ontiveros
family. In early September, Ontiveros went calling for Kobe who was
romping in the yard…it was time for breakfast. Kobe was missing.
Ontiveros immediately came to SEAACA looking for her dog and posted
a notice in the lost and found book. She posted flyers around the
neighborhood and searched day and night for him. After two weeks
with no results, the Ontiveros’ had to break the news to their young
daughters that they probably wouldn’t see Kobe again. The girls
sobbed often and wondered where Kobe would have disappeared too.
Last week, (10/05/06), Mrs. Ontiveros received a phone call from
Little Elm Animal Control officials, located in Denton, Texas, a
small town North of Dallas. She was told that a Terrier type dog was
brought in by a good Samaritan and when they scanned it for a
microchip, an AVID microchip was found. After a brief call to the
toll-free number, Little Elm Animal Control had the owner’s
information…an owner living 1400 miles away in Bellflower,
California.
“Michelle Ontiveros called me very upset
yesterday,” said Aaron Reyes director of operations for SEAACA. “She
explained what had happened and was distraught that she could not
afford to fly “Kobe” back home, nor would her car endure the trip to
Texas and back,” Reyes exclaimed.
“We have limited options in these kinds of
cases because we (too) cannot afford to provide this type of
service,” said Reyes. SEAACA officials met to discuss Kobe’s
predicament and the suggestion was made to try calling the AVID
microchip company for assistance. The call for help was made and
within fifteen minutes AVID officials contacted SEAACA with the good
news…they would fly Kobe home. “When I called Mrs. Ontiveros, she
was so emotional.” “I could hear her daughters screaming with
excitement in the background when she shared the good news with
them,” Reyes said. 11 year-old Sarah, who refers to Kobe as her
little brother, said that she already has Kobe’s Halloween costume
picked out for this year….Elvis.
