South Gate: SEAACA Investigates Eleven Cat Killings in One Day
There is nothing unusual about
receiving calls to pick up deceased cats in SEAACA's service area,
as the agency services twelve cities of approximately 800,000
people, many of whom have pets. However yesterday (Wednesday) was
not business as usual in South Gate, particularly in a ten block
area of the southern portion of the city.
"We
received eleven calls for dead cats on front lawns and in the
street, all in relatively close proximity to one another," said
Aaron Reyes, Director of Operations for SEAACA.
"The responding Animal Control Officer reported that
the cats appeared mauled and wet," Reyes stated. Examinations by
SEAACA's veterinary staff confirmed that all except one of the cats
received varying degrees of bodily trauma. All the injuries proved
fatal.
"It
appears that these cats were attacked by the same animal or animals,
but we've had no calls or complaints from anyone in the neighborhood
to indicate awareness of how the cats were killed," exclaimed Reyes.
"We’re leaning towards classifying this as a dog
attack and not a coyote attack," said Reyes. "Coyotes tend to
consume their prey and will do far more damage to a carcass than was
seen here."
Residents in the
affected neighborhood -- Southern Ave. to the north, San Gabriel
Ave. to the west, Annetta Ave. to the east and Tweedy Blvd. to the
south -- who are missing a cat(s) or have information to offer
SEAACA investigators are asked to call (562) 803-3301 x 224. |
